If anyone pressures you to buy gift cards and give them the codes, it’s a scam.
Gift cards are for gifts and personal use — they are not a legitimate way to pay bills, taxes, membership/fan cards, fines, tech support, or to “unlock” an account.
Common scam scripts to watch for
- “Pay your fine/tax/fee/membership card with a gift card.”
- “Buy gift cards to receive a prize or refund.”
- “Pay with gift cards to avoid arrest or to keep your job.”
- “Send the card codes now — we need them to fix your account.”
What to do immediately
Stop. Don’t buy the card.
Don’t share the card number or photo of the code.
Hang up/block the caller or sender.
Why it’s a scam
Gift card codes are essentially cash once given away — scammers ask for them because codes are untraceable and hard to recover.
Remember:
-
Gift cards are for gifts — not for payments.
-
Never read or send gift card codes to anyone you don’t know.
-
Once you share a code, your money is gone.
